It’s nearly here!
After a long, hot summer dominated by the newfound success of our national cricket team, the time has come to put away the Kookaburras and bring out the Sherrins. When the pitches are covered (or taken out) and the goal posts go up. When the off-whites of Test cricket are replaced by the black and whites of newly-purchased members’ polos, freshly sublimated guernseys and stiff peaked club caps, yet to be broken in.
Yes, it’s time of year again folks. Football is back.
Or at least, somewhat back. We’re not quite to the real stuff yet. Indeed, many supporters have at best one eye lazily open and half-focused on these matches, their hibernation not quite yet broken. And you can understand why; pre-season games were rinky-dink in the past and have even less meaning now, given that there isn’t even prize money or a trophy to play for. So you can understand the attitude of those who say ‘big whoop’.
For the rest of us, though, a fix by any other name is a fix nonetheless. And while we are impatient for the real stuff to begin, one must never look a gift horse in the mouth. Especially when he’s your dealer…
It’s still February, but the juices are starting to flow again.
Welcome to 2014.
