Good afternoon, one and all.
I’ve been mostly checked out of football for about a month now, so it’s sort of crept up on me that we have an AFL Draft going on tonight. What’s more, it’s the first AFL Draft to be conducted over the better part of two days, with the first round selections being called tonight, then all selections from the second round onward being called tomorrow at mid-day.
Yes, that’s right. We’re doing this glorified reading of names in two bits. I don’t even…
For Collingwood, the National Draft shapes as a bit of an anti-climax, with our trade period activity framed around the objectives of trading for Dayne Beams while still banking enough points to match conceivable bids for Next Generation Academy prospect Isacc Quaynor and Father-Son candidate Will Kelly. We hold selections 41, 44, 57, 59 and 60 going into the draft, although these will almost certainly rise and fall (and possibly rise again) in the draft order as picks for NGA and F/S players are matched for other clubs. Picks may also shift wildly between rounds of the draft, with the introduction of live trading picks during the selection meeting itself throwing another unpredictable variable into the mix.
With the Pre-Season Draft largely a non-factor these days, attention will then shift to the Rookie Draft, to be also held tomorrow, where again our activity is again projected to be limited, given that we have promised positions to the luckless Timothy Broomhead and the player from Sydney whose name I won’t even mention. As such, we may be one of the first to be able to leave the room and hit the bar early in both selection meetings.
Coverage begins from 6:30pm AEDT on Fox Footy tonight, and will resume at 12pm AEDT tomorrow. Feel free to discuss in here as well.
Over to you…
